iPhone 5S: September launch date reported

Apple is to launch the latest version of the iPhone at a special event on 10 September, according to reports.

The rumoured event may also see a plastic-cased ‘budget iPhone’ being unveiled, which is expected to be Apple’s next move in an attempt to break into emerging markets.
The yet-to-launched iPhone 5S is expected to come with a form of fingerprint scanner, a rumour which has been circulating online since a developer found plans for biometric scanning in a folder in the iOS7 beta, the operating system the new handset will carry.
It is also thought that the phone will come with significantly improved display and carry a 12 megapixel camera and dual LED flash.
But the new product will probably not feature a larger screen, unlike most of its competitors.
"Some customers value large screen size, others value other factors such as resolution, colour quality, white balance, brightness, reflectivity, screen longevity, power consumption, portability, compatibility with apps and many things,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said.
“Our competitors had made some significant trade-offs in many of these areas in order to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these trade-offs exist."
The Californian company will be hoping the new iPhone will increase its share of the smartphone market, where it has been losing ground to Android.
Despite exceeding expectations in terms of shipment volumes, iOS saw a year-on-year decline in market share for the second quarter of 2013,according to estimates.
The Apple operating system shipped 32.2 million units in the second quarter, up from 26 million for the same period in 2012, but its market share fell to 13.2 per cent from 16.6 per cent.
Meanwhile, Android’s cemented its position at the top of the smartphone operating systems table with a 79.3 per cent share of the market, up from 69.1 per cent.
